MUSIC / VENUE REVUE
Hello, my name is Colin and I play with MTarms, I’ve been asked to elaborate
on the Wheatsheaf music format. Well, in the first instance I have to congratulate
Kate on her brave journey on making her pub a music venue, because traditionally,
it is always difficult to start from scratch wherever you are in the country
to undertake such a venture but thankfully she has the tremendous support of
Barbara, a professional musician, Allan Williams and Corrin Bates ( father and
daughter, Allan being a long time musician ), also there is the commitment of
the now established “jam band” who perform and encourage other musicians
of all genres at their Monday night sessions.
The Friday night entertainment is usually single artists or duos and I have to say they have been of a very high standard. Saturday nights are usually band nights that accommodate all age groups, for instance, we do rhythm and blues and on the 4th November we are supporting a young band called Resolve who are all in their early twenties writing and performing their own music, they have an excellent following in the district. Other bands who perform at the pub are Off the Hook, in my view, the best working rock/blues band in the county. Then, there has been The Solway Delta band, who give nothing less than a hundred percent being driven by the legendary presence and spectacular guitarist Mr. John Dugan. So with these bands and the many more that perform at the Wheatsheaf it has to be the venue to target for a night out. Monday night “ sessions” band are called Mine Shaft. The line up is Sean on bass, his stage presence and performances are awesome, John plays second guitar and he has latent talent that I hope we shall all see in the future. Gerry plays first/lead guitar and if you really want to see “incredible” come and watch Gerry, I’m not joking!! Allan plays accompanying guitar but tends to be the band MD ( musical director ), Russell has just recently joined the band as lead vocal and is so far working very well with the rest of the guys, finally, there is the jewel in the crown, young Andrew, he plays drums, boy has this guy got talent, even the best and oldest of us can learn from him, you really must come and see him! Tuesday nights are taken over by Barbara who endeavors to encourage vocal talent of all ages, by giving tuition and support from both her own vocals and her own personal high quality backing tapes.
One of the other nice things about this place is that you sometimes get to see very old friends that you may not have seen for many years, for example, Corrin made sure that I met up with my old friend Frank Hall ( one of the top ten drummers in Britain in the 1970’s ) who used to play with Baz Dunnery, brother of Francis ( Baz is the most gifted musician I have ever known, in the company of Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan ). Frank and Baz also played with Billy Branch and Dennis McCarten all of whom performed in that well known band of the 70’s Necromandus. So thanks very much for that really incredible treat Corrin.
Anyway I do hope everyone out there has got a feel for what this venue is all
about. I reckon at some level or other there is something for everybody who
wants to enjoy or express themselves whether it be as part of the audience or
part of the performance, a real musical community. GOOD LUCK GUYS -- Colin
